In January, BitTorrent launched BTT in an effort to tokenize its ecosystem, approximately six months after the company was acquired by blockchain startup, TRON.
BitTorrent is collaborating with CoinPayments to facilitate support for bitcoin (BTC), Binance Coin (BNB), and TRON (TRX) payments for premium services.
Customers will be able to use BTT to purchase BitTorrent and µTorrent Pro subscriptions, which offers malware detection, HD streaming, and file conversion.
According to TRON founder and BitTorrent CEO, Justin Sun, the CoinPayments partnership will “make BitTorrent (BTT) liquid in the online marketplace before [the token] is fully integrated into our desktop and mobile products.”
Blockchain application “BitTorrent Speed” is scheduled for launch this summer, allowing customers to spend BTT for seeding and bandwidth for faster download times.
BitTorrent, first released in 2004, has stated their existing decentralized p2p network supports over 100 million users.
The roadmap for BitTorrent and TRON’s merger is often referred to as “Project Atlas,” and intends to construct a decentralized content distribution platform utilizing cryptocurrency.
